5 Upcoming Basement Remodeling Trends

Wisconsin’s top basement remodeling trends include stylish ceilings, statement stairs and lighting, wallpaper and curated color schemes. In 2023, Wisconsin homeowners are looking to add more usable space to their homes. Use Reality’s Construction’s guide to learn more about upcoming remodeling trends and which to heed caution on. Spoiler alert, it’s trend #4.

Innovative Basement Ceilings

In 2023, expect to see more complex ceiling design. Think about it, flooring and paint selection for walls are commonly stressed over by homeowners. The ceiling takes up the same amount of space and is just as visible! You can make a statement with your basement ceiling and this upcoming trend proves it.

  • Celebrate the original bones and leave beams or special elements exposed.
  • Choose a fun paint color for the rafters. Lighter colors brighten up the room for a larger feel.
  • Build soffits around ductwork and create an inset ceiling design in the space between ducts, pipes and electrical cables.

Statement Basement Stairs

The basement stairwell often takes a sartorial backseat when it comes to design. However, stairs don’t have to be purely utilitarian. Stairs can get you to the lower level and look good doing it!

  • Paint the riser, tread and handrail with contrasting colors.
  • Replace wooden vertical balusters with metal or glass panels.
  • Add wallpaper on the risers for a fun surprise.
  • Install a colorful, patterned runner that compliments the upper levels.
  • Refinish wood stairs for a fresh look.

Blue Color Palettes for Basements

This year’s basement trends use rich blues with a hint of green. A blue/green color scheme is in line with other home trends. Nature themes and zen colors are increasingly popular. To create a calm and relaxing atmosphere, use earthy colors alongside pops of blue.

  • Incorporate blue hues into furniture, pillows and throws.
  • Paint a blue accent wall.
  • Choose blue carpeting, rugs and curtains.
  • Add blue artwork or wallpaper.

Modern Wallpaper for Basements

Wallpaper is a top basement trend for 2023. Forget dated 1960’s wallpaper, we can do better! Today’s wallpaper is all about creating visual interest in a subtle or bold way. Tread lightly with this trend when going bold or be sure to select removable wallpaper (in case you grow tired of the loud print). Wallpaper is a great tool for creating an accent wall or jazzing up an entire room.

  • Wallpaper with a lighter color scheme will brighten the space while darker colors create a more enclosed, cozy feel. Consider the lighting or your basement. Darker tones work better with abundant natural light.
  • If you’re in your forever home, go wild with your selection! If you plan on resale, neutral colors always go over better with buyers. Removable wallpaper is a great solution for both scenarios.

Layered Lighting for Basement Ambiance

Lighting is key to creating a great atmosphere. This year’s trend incorporates multiple layers of lighting to draw attention to the best attributes. Lighting isn’t just for functionality, but a way to add interior style. Use multiple light sources through fixtures, Edison bulb lights, twinkle lights and lamps.

  • Incorporate LED recessed lights for a no-fuss, energy-efficient solution. To determine how far the recessed lights should be apart, divide the ceiling height in half. Recessed lights for a 8 foot tall ceiling should be 4 feet apart.
  • Twinkle lights are affordable and an easy way to add extra lighting. Add twinkle lights near the exposed ceiling for a soft glow and relaxing atmosphere.
  • For areas with low ceiling height, a semi-flush mount fixture will save space.
Wall sconces separate the basement into smaller areas. Consider adding sconces for a true movie theater feel.
